Sandy Stream pond comprises 17 of Baxter State Park’s 209,644 acres, but acreage is only the beginning. It is home to wild brook trout, beaver, mink and other small game. Many species of birds forage along the shore. Kingfishers and waterfowl fish the pond. Moose and whitetail deer browse the shore. Moose spend hours in the pond gaining valuable minerals and protein from aquatic vegetation.
